Copyright infringement has become a major concern for educators. As a teacher, I am always concerned about doing the best I can for my students. I want them to be exposed to the richest resources available. This can cause issues when planning lessons and preparing for those lessons. Precautions must be taken to be certain that no infringements are made against any copyrighted material. I make sure to purchase enough consumable for each student in my class, we use blackline masters provided by the companies for copies, and have gained permission to copy materials that are no longer accessable (this occurred in a reading series and we had to have workbooks printed, of course we gained permission first. ) I am careful to teach my students about plagerism, even at a second grade age, so they become familiar with the concept and it become ingrained in their educational construct. They learn that it is actually stealing to copy the work of another. We have actually contacted Disney to ask permission to use some Disney material for our closing program (which we were granted for a fee.) Copyright infringemnet has becdome a constant undercurrent for many aspects of my teacher profession.

As a teacher and an ethical person, I try hard to follow the “rules”. I wonder how many teachers have changed their teaching style, programs, or plans because of copyright infringments. I wonder how many really great lessons have been put to the wayside because people are afraid of the ramifications for using material without permission. I also wonder how many teachers and schools have been charged with violations of copyright and what the consequences have been. I will say that these concerns have in some cases held me back from using material that might be considered questionable violation of copyright. I find it frustrating because this ultimately impacts the kids we are trying to teach.
